Online Task 5

Online task 5 – “One-Three-One Essay” + Thesis statement
Due Sept. 16th

I. Watch Prof Stacy on a video about “Constructing a One-Three-One Essay”

As you watch the video, have the Essay “The Hazards of Going-to-movies” by your side. You need a print-out from the site below. It is the last essay in the website and it starts with the words “I am a movie fanatic”:

In the print-out of the essay, identify the:
a) introduction,
b) 3 supporting paragraphs and
c) concluding aragraph.
 
The thesis statement does not come explicit in the first paragraph. However, Professor Stacy says it in the video, calling it “a seed, a germ”. What is the thesis statement (the basic idea) for this essay?
d) Identify the plan of Development in the Introductory Paragraph;
e) Identify the Topic Sentences in the Supporting Paragraphs;
f) Identify the Examples that support each of these Topic Sentences;
g) Identify, in the Concluding Paragraph, the Restatement of the Thesis, the Summary and the Pointing out to the future.




II.  Thesis statements

Are the following thesis statements good?  Identify their parts. Circle the topic and underline the controllling ideas.

  1. Mom´s Country Kitchen offers tasty food, entertainment for children, and quick service.
  2. Helping a son or a daughter plan a wedding can create family unity, leave pleasant memories, yet create unexpected expenses.
  3. Attending college allows students to learn new information, make lifetime friends, and prepare for a carrer.
  4. Smoking is detrimental because it costs money, creates pollution, and results in medical problems.
  5. Women who enter politics are usually socially conscious, extraordinarily bright, and self-directed.
  6. Small businesses usually succeed when the owners are adventuresome, creative, and well organized.
  7. Heavy flooding can drive people from their homes, destroy crops, and interrupt  business activities.


Commentary guidelines

After you watched the video and did the exercise on thesis statements suggested above, answer the following questions and turn them in on Sept. 16th, 2010.

1. What did you learn by doing tasks I and II? Give specific examples.

2. If you were to suggest this video to a college mate, what would you emphasize? This should be a commentary about the task and not a summary or a description of what you did. You should identify important aspects of the task, discuss each of those in turn, illustrating with the video.

3. Make any other comments about the tasks if necessary.
