Online Task 9

Dear students,

As I have briefly mentioned in class, I coordinate a project on learner English called CABRI (Corpus de Aprendizes Brasileiros de Inglês).  This project is part of an international project called International Corpus of Learner English whose coordinator works at the University of Louvain in Belgium. The Brazilian part of it Br-ICLE.  We do collect student essays and analyze them in order to better understand their necessities.  This means that the more essays we have the more we can prepare suitable materials to our learners (including you and your UFMG mates).

I would like to ask you to read the power point presentation attached and if you have no questions (and if you have time too) you can turn in the essay on Oct. 21st.  The deadline, though, is Oct. 28th.  Therefore, I´ll be able to answer your questions about the essay writing and the form you need to fill in during our face-to-face class on Oct. 21st.

This essay is a class activity (our Task 9) and if you give me your permission it will be part of my research data. Please take into consideration that  we will contribute to  linguistic studies in Brazil and abroad.

Please check your e-mail to get three files: the guidelines for the essay you are supposed to write, the model of a filled out Learner Profile, and a Learner Profile which should be filled out, printed and turned in together with the essay.

The essay should be written on your own, though you can check dictionaries, grammar books, sites etc. as long as you put that information on the Learner Profile.

Best regards,

Deise Dutra

It may sound too funny or scare, but it’s true.
There are many reasons people do not eat healthy. Some of these reasons are that they do not know how to cook, they do not have time to cook, and because of the cost.

Nothing is certain but death and taxes.

Online Task 4

Online task 4 – Reading a poem and reacting to it
Due Sept. 2nd

1) Read the poem below, by Robert  Frost, and notice the differences (for rhyming reasons) with the translation which has been  provided

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening    (by Robert Frost)

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Tradução (de Carlos Gohn:)

Parado no bosque numa tarde de inverno

De quem é este bosque penso saber.
Ele cá não está para eu ver;
não há testemunhas de meu olhar
fixo no bosque, a neve a crescer.

Meu cavalinho deve estranhar
a parada no bosque, sem casa, sem lar.
À tarde, o inverno  é rigoroso
entre  bosque e  lago a congelar

Ele sacode os arreios, cioso
do feno a vir, saboroso.
O soprar do vento a ressoar
se mistura à neve a cair

Do bosque não quero sair
mas  tenho promessas a cumprir.
Há muito que andar antes de poder dormir
Há muito que andar antes de poder dormir
