Online task 4 – Reading a poem and reacting to it
Due Sept. 2nd
1) Read the poem below, by Robert Frost, and notice the differences (for rhyming reasons) with the translation which has been provided
Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening (by Robert Frost)
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Tradução (de Carlos Gohn:)
Parado no bosque numa tarde de inverno
De quem é este bosque penso saber.
Ele cá não está para eu ver;
não há testemunhas de meu olhar
fixo no bosque, a neve a crescer.
Meu cavalinho deve estranhar
a parada no bosque, sem casa, sem lar.
À tarde, o inverno é rigoroso
entre bosque e lago a congelar
Ele sacode os arreios, cioso
do feno a vir, saboroso.
O soprar do vento a ressoar
se mistura à neve a cair
Do bosque não quero sair
mas tenho promessas a cumprir.
Há muito que andar antes de poder dormir
Há muito que andar antes de poder dormir
